The following is included in the "Hickerson Family History" by Jack and Jay Hickerson, published in 1988. Today, May 1, 2001, I was given permission by Jack to place information from this book on the web. I choose at this time to copy the unlinked families located in the back of their book on pages 447-451. Hopefully this will aid in the research of placing these families to determine to which Hickerson family they belong and if they all spring from one ancestor or several. No claim is made as to the accuracy of this information or its linked notes.

I am struggling to learn how to use my scanner and upload the pages of this book to this site. It is taking much more time than I had anticipated so please be patient as I work on this project. I also suspect that this book will be more pages than I am allowed by my server and I will probably have to move it to another site in the near future. When you see a word or page number underlined, that means it is connected to a linked page. Here is the link for what I have done so far:
The Charles Hickerson branch is a third early Hickerson family with many descendants. Charles was born around 1725 in Stafford County, Virginia, and appears to be the progenitor of the North Carolina Hickersons depicted in Thomas Felix Hickerson's book "HAPPY VALLEY." Charles Hickerson married Mary Little (Lytle) and had four children. He moved to Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in 1778. Charles and Mary Little Hickerson's first three children were Jane, Mary and Captain Joseph Hickerson (1747--1777). Their fourth child was David Hickerson who was born ca. 1750 in Stafford County Virginia. He married Nancy Tolliver and had nine children including the following three (three grandchildren also listed):
1. John Hickerson (1782--1846) m. Nancy Petty. John Hickerson founded Coffee County, TN, in 1836, and settled near what is now Manchester, home of the large annual Hickerson family reunion for this branch since 1945. John had several children including:
a. Charles Hickerson (1818-1897). Descendants include Flora Gang of Manchester, TN, and Mary Jane Miller of Madison, TN.
b. Judge William Pitt Hickerson, Sr. (1816--1887); lived in Manchester, TN, and had several descendants, including Robert Hickerson of Ashville, NC.
c. Lytle David Hickerson (1828--?); m. Frances Wood; founded Hickerson Station, Tullahoma, TN.
2. Lytle Hickerson (1793--1884); born in NC; m. Amelia Gywn in 1827. Thomas Felix Hickerson, author of HAPPY VALLEY, was Lytle's grandson. Many early families of the Yadkin River Valley near Wilkesboro, including the Hickersons and Gwyns, are depicted in this book.
3. Joseph Hickerson (1789--?) m. Nancy Rosseau in 1813. They had four children including George Washington Hickerson who moved to McLenna County TX. This George Hickerson had sixteen children. John Dewey Hickerson, who worked for the US State Department, is a descendant of this branch.

Thomas Hickerson:
Thomas Hickerson (sometime spelled Higgerson) was born ca. 1736 and died in 1812. W. W. Whitaker has done a great deal of research on this branch and is descended from John Hickerson (ca. 1760--1791; m. Martha Loving) one of Thomas' sons. Research indicates that Thomas Hickerson's parents were Thomas (Higerson) and Sarah (Elwood?). He was born ca. 1710 and died in Stafford Co., VA, in 1742. Thomas and Sarah were married in Overwharton Parish of Stafford County. Since both Thomas (Jr.) and Nathaniel Hickerson are listed one above the other on Fauquier County's list of tithables in 1759, it is speculated that they might be brothers.
It is also thought that Thomas Higerson/Hickerson's (Sr.) father might be John T. Higgenson (Higgerson, Hickerson) ca. 1680--1743; this John married Elizabeth _______ and died in Stafford County, VA. His children included Hannah, John and Thomas. The Thomas has already been identified as possibly being Thomas Hickerson's (Jr.) father, but could the son John be the man identified as the progenitor of the Baltimore County Higginsons/Hickersons outlined in this book? If this is the case not only would we get back another generation on our Baltimore County Hickerson branch, but we could link our branch to the Thomas and Nathaniel Hickerson lines as well (and possibly the Charles Hickerson branch) which would considerably increase our family treee connecting us to most of the Hickersons in America. At this time, however, this is mere speculation; more in-depth research is needed. Although the dates seem about right since our John Higginson was probably born ca. 1700, there is no hard evidence to make the connection. While close geographical proximity between Stafford and Fauquier Counties makes the John T./Thomas/Thomas/Nathaniel connection plausible, the approximate 90 mile seperation (straight line) between Stafford County, VA and Baltimore Co., MD, makes the John T. Higgenson/John Higginson connection a bit more tenuous but tantalizing nonetheless.
As it now stands the Nathaniel, Thomas, Charles and John (our Baltimore branch) branches are considered as separate branches of the Hickerson family which may or may not connect in America; it appears that most of the Hickerson descendants now living in America can be traced back to one of these four branches. Various other early Hickerson, however, have not been traced back as of this date to the above four branches, although many of them probably do (our list was longer, but connections have been made in many instances). The following Hickersons are some who have not been traced to one of the four branches:
John Hickerson (Higgason); born in the 1730's; lived in Hanover Co., VA; had at least one son, Thomas (4/21/1760--183_) who was born in Hanover Co.; Thomas married Ann White on 9/11/1786 in Louisa Co., VA; they had at least three children: William, Thomas and "Surpy."
William A. Hickerson; b. in the early 1800's in Coffee County, TN; m. Sarah Davidson in 1840. Two descendants are Marsha Lautenbach of Bristol, VA and Christine Foren of Nashville, TN.
Jerusha Hickerson, b. 6/18/1813 in KY; d. 1870; m. James Scott in 1841; they had seven children; descendants include Roberta Owens of Alexandria, VA.
Arrington Hickerson, b. ca. 1811 in IN; m. Martha Ellington; had 10 children. NOTES:
Silas Hickerson (1791--?) b. in Washington Co., KY; m. Suria Wells in 1824; had seven children including Walter Hickerson.
John H. Hickerson; John (given this name when found) was found with his younger brother in a burning wagon train near Shreaveport, LA, in the 1840's; raised by the Montgomery family in TX; m. Augusta Collinburn; they had five children; descendants include Mary Lou Worthy of Hot Springs, AR.
John Hickerson (ca. 1805--1876) m. (1st.) Julia Moore; (2nd.) Mary (Polly) Moore; John had six children including Isaac, James S., John C., Allen E. Elhannon and William--all born in KY. NOTES:
Ezekiel Hickerson (mentioned by W. W. Whitaker) m. Susan Richards on 10/19/1798, in Lincoln Co., KY.
William Hickerson born in 1777 in VA; m. Phoeba ______; had seven children; moved to Washington County, KY.
James Hickerson, born in 1794, in PA; moved to Wayne Co., IA; seven grandchildren include Glen, Roy, Pierce, Harry, John, Paul and Roscoe; descendants include Ken Hickerson of Kansas City, MO.
Walter Higgason (Higgerson); (1780--1826) b. in Culpeper, VA; m. Esther Elley in Fauquier Co., VA. in 1793; had nine children including Benjamin; descendants include Diane Mason Gray of Virginia Beach, VA. It appears that this family kept the name Higgerson or Higgason.
Samuel Higgerson, b. ca. 1788; died in the 1840's; possible brother to Walter (above); m. Pollie Ritcherson in 1810; had several children including Samuel Wesley; descendants include Chester Higgerson of Murphyboro, IL. The name Higgerson was kept by this branch as well.
John Hickerson (listed as soldier in the Revolutionary War); m. Martha Loving; had at least one son, William Loving Hickerson (6/8/1784--8/24/1860 in San Bernardino, CA.) who m. Melinda Luster and had at least one son, Andrew Jackson Hickerson who is listed as being born in Smith Co., TN (m. 3/23/1823 to Margaret Hoover Shirley); A. J. Hickerson and wife had a large family (at least six children) and lived in IL. One of their children was named Finis William Lee Davidson Hickerson (b. 1/2/1840 in Vandalia, IL, and d. 10/5/1915 in Ft. Bidwell, CA). One descendant is Ruth Hickerson White of Tillamook, OR. This family appears to be part of the Thomas Hickerson family researched by W. W. Whitaker, but there seem to be a few discrepancies.
Harold John Hickerson b. 6/21/1890 in Bellvue, Ontario, Canada, died 7/23/1975 in Salem, OR. One descendant is William Val Donald Hickerson of Washington State. Harold's father was probably named John Hickerson.
Some early Hickersons in the 1850 Census of Perry Co., TN:
Nathaniel Hickerson; b. ca. 1827; m. Narcissa; six children.
John D. Hickerson; b. 1804 in TN; m. Mary; seven children; descendants include Larry Hickerson of Nashville, TN. NOTES
William Hickerson; b. 1825 in TN; m. Elizabeth Sharp in 1844; had eight children; William's father was John Hickerson (b. in KY in late 1700's) who married Nancy Loving. NOTE: John (W. W. Whitaker's ancestor) m. Martha Loving. This John Hickerson (father) and William (son) seem to be the ancestors of Ruth Hickerson White listed above, although information is confusing.
Jackson Hickerson; b. 1823 in KY; m. Elinor (Ellen); had five children including perhaps the John Hickerson who was found in the burning wagon train (above).
In the 1850 Census of Wayne County, TN:
Jefferson Hickerson; b. 1812 in KY; m. Nancy Ann Bishop in Perry Co., TN; had two brothers John and Daniel; descendants include Willie Mae West of Austin, TX.
Leonard Hickerson; b. 1810; m. Manerva Oglis in 1829; six children.
